Munich, 21. November 2025 – Carrier-neutral parcel lockers for city neighborhoods: Munich’s Department of Mobility and Münchner Wohnen are bringing carrier-neutral parcel locker stations into residential neighborhoods. With the new Munich Boxes, the City of Munich is taking new steps toward a modern and as sustainable as possible parcel logistics system. Users can send and receive parcels across multiple carriers at the new stations. Project partner Münchner Wohnen has hosted the first installations in its housing estates. Nine Munich Boxes, each with capacity for up to 200 parcels depending on size, are currently in operation, with more to follow. Mayor Dominik Krause presented the new system at Paulanerplatz in the Au district together with Mobility Councillor Georg Dunkel, Münchner Wohnen Managing Director Christian Müller, and a service provider. One of the first boxes has now gone live right in the middle of a Münchner Wohnen neighborhood.

Munich as a parcel capital

Munich is a parcel hotspot. According to a study by the Technical University of Munich, households in the city receive an average of around 93 parcels per year. This presents challenges not only for delivery companies. In many streets, especially in residential areas, multiple delivery vehicles are often parked at the same time, sometimes double-parked or on sidewalks.

An alternative to doorstep delivery is delivery to a parcel locker or parcel shop, where parcels can be collected whenever it suits the recipient.

One system, multiple carriers

In a densely built city like Munich, there is not enough space for every logistics company to install its own locker infrastructure. This is why the Department of Mobility is supporting so-called carrier-neutral parcel locker systems in the uniform Munich Box design. These are systems into which at least three different logistics providers can deliver and ship parcels. The boxes are currently operated by two service providers, myflexbox and DeinFach, a subsidiary of DHL. Together, they cover the largest logistics carriers, including DHL, GLS, DPD, UPS, and FedEx.

Convenient access close to home

The Munich Boxes provide residents with a convenient nearby option to receive or send parcels, whether in residential neighborhoods or at highly frequented locations. In addition to installations on private property provided by Münchner Wohnen, a two-year pilot project is scheduled to begin in early 2026, involving the installation and evaluation of ten Munich Boxes in public space in Haidhausen.

All boxes, whether located in public areas or on private land, are publicly accessible and available to all citizens.

Statements

Mayor Dominik Krause said:

“The people of Munich love online shopping. However, this leads to enormous delivery traffic and frequently blocked sidewalks and cycle lanes. The Munich Box helps reduce traffic. Thanks to the carrier-neutral concept, it saves valuable space in the city and makes deliveries easier for parcel services. Customers also benefit, as they don’t have to stay at home waiting for deliveries. Parcels are securely stored and available around the clock. Munich Boxes are therefore a real added value for customers and businesses and contribute to road safety in our city.”

Mobility Councillor Georg Dunkel added:

“The Munich Box is an important building block for making delivery traffic in the city more efficient and sustainable. When fewer individual delivery trips are needed, everyone benefits: less congestion, fewer emissions, and a better quality of life in our neighborhoods. Launching this project in close cooperation with Münchner Wohnen shows Munich’s strength in innovation and civic spirit.”

Christian Müller, Managing Director of Münchner Wohnen, said:

“The Munich Box is a real benefit for our tenants. They save time and travel, can collect or send parcels flexibly, and benefit from a solution that also reduces delivery traffic in our neighborhoods. We are proud to implement this forward-looking project together with the City of Munich.”

Multiple service providers – one box

The “Munich Boxes” project is based on a City Council decision on urban logistics as part of Munich’s Mobility Strategy 2035. The goal is to make commercial transport in the city sustainable, efficient, and safe.

By enabling parcels from multiple providers to be shipped and received via a single locker station, the project aims to reduce doorstep deliveries and delivery traffic, especially in residential areas.

Instead of many individual delivery trips, parcels are consolidated at central Munich Boxes. Upon delivery, customers receive a pickup code that allows them to open the locker compartment 24/7. In addition to receiving parcels, sending and returns are also possible. The carriers serving each box are indicated directly on the stations.

Münchner Wohnen as first project partner

From Laim to Sendling and from Bogenhausen to Harlaching, nine Munich Boxes are already in operation in Münchner Wohnen neighborhoods. The municipal housing company is a key project partner and the first to provide space for the Munich Boxes within its estates.

Münchner Wohnen aims to sustainably reduce delivery traffic in its neighborhoods as part of its mobility concept while also creating an additional convenient service for tenants. Residents are informed about the new offering through notices in their buildings. The service has already been well received at the first locations.

Further Munich Boxes are planned as part of three new housing developments, for example in Neufreimann, Ramersdorf, and Moosach.

Service provider perspectives

Jonathan Grothaus, CEO & Founder of myflexbox, said:

“As the largest carrier-neutral parcel locker network in the German-speaking region, with the most integrations, we are fundamentally open to everyone. We already consolidate deliveries from DPD, UPS, GLS, and FedEx within one infrastructure. Our success is based on being a neutral provider not owned by any parcel carrier. Munich demonstrates with the Munich Box how real collaboration can work, creating direct value for the city and its people. Here in the Au district, we show what the last mile can look like when designed in the interest of citizens: sustainable and future-oriented.”

Lukas Beckedorff, Managing Director of DeinFach, added:

“With our carrier-neutral automation solution, we are creating a network that makes logistics processes more flexible, simpler, and more accessible. It is important to us to develop easy-to-use stations that create real value for our partners and customers. DeinFach offers an open platform for all parcel carriers and retailers, making it an ideal solution for the Munich Box. We focus on partnership-based cooperation to make sending and receiving parcels simple and convenient at any time.”
